Project Details

Franklin Forest Products (FFP) is a wood processing company located on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Shift Energy Group was contracted to help FFP lower their BC Hydro energy bill. FFP's monthly energy bills were getting out of control. Shift was able to significantly reduce the hydro bills by completing an LED lighting retrofit and installing advanced daylight and occupancy controls.

The site has a main mill with numerous outbuildings, a green chain and other processing machinery. Previous lighting systems included 400W, 250W and 175W Metal Halides as well as T12 and T8 linear fluorescents in 8’ and 4’ lengths. There were also incandescent lamps throughout. Shift took inventory of the existing, inefficient and dated lighting fixtures, and designed a new lighting system with new top of the line, high efficiency LEDs; taking care to use appropriately rated IP fixtures where applicable.

Savings in many interior spaces were augmented using advanced motion controls to dim light levels when no motion is detected. We specified these where there is no risk from a safety perspective. The new LED lighting system not only reduced their lighting consumption by 86%, but is rated to last 15+ years. Virtually eliminating the need to worry about the safety and cost implications of replacing and maintaining the old lighting system.

Franklin Forest Products was able to save substantially on their energy bills with no out-of-pocket expense. Shift provided the option to finance the entire cost of the project with the energy savings from the project - resulting in immediate positive cashflow for the client.
